Regions by Geomagnetic Latitude

All regions in our database sorted by mean geomagnetic latitude — the single best predictor of how often you can see auroras and how strongly storms affect the area.

Auroral zone

≥ 60°

Regions where auroras are visible during quiet conditions and on most stormy nights. The classical aurora belt.

Sub-auroral zone

50°–60°

Regions where auroras appear during moderate to strong storms (Kp 5–7). Several events per year.

Mid latitudes

30°–50°

Auroras require severe storms (Kp 7+). Visible a few times per solar cycle, often as red glow on the horizon.

…and 228 more regions in this zone

Low latitudes

< 30°

Auroras are extremely rare — only during exceptional events like the Carrington-class storms.
