About countries and regions in the database

This section is the site's geographic tree: Country → Region → City. We cover countries across the CIS (Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova) and major European and world countries (Germany, France, Spain, Turkey, China, USA, UK).

Country and region data come from the open GeoNames database (CC BY) supplemented by a manual dictionary of native names. In total the database holds 400+ regions and 2700+ cities. Each region page lists cities sorted by population.

Pick a country, then a region, then a city. The city page shows the current Kp index, a 3-day forecast, local time in the city's time zone, geomagnetic latitude and the chance of observing auroras in northern regions.
